The Bakerloo line opened in March 1906 between Lambeth North, then called Kennington Road, and Baker Street, and reached Elephant & Castle five months later. Its name is a contraction of its first title, the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway. It reached Queen's Park in 1915 and Watford Junction in 1917, and from 1939 to 1979 it also ran the Stanmore branch, which then became part of the new Jubilee line.
