Line 1 is the dark blue line and the oldest on the map. It opened on August 15, 1974 as a short nine-station stretch between Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni. Through-running with Korail lines later stretched it from Soyosan in the north down to Incheon, and on December 16, 2023 it was extended north again, from Soyosan through Cheongsan and Jeongok to Yeoncheon. In HelloSubway you type it from Yeoncheon to Incheon, 65 stations.

The route

The northern section runs Yeoncheon, Jeongok, Cheongsan, Soyosan, Dongducheon, Bosan, Dongducheon Jungang, Jihaeng, Deokjeong, Deokgye, Yangju, Nogyang, Ganeung, Uijeongbu, Hoeryong, Mangwolsa, Dobongsan, Dobong, Banghak, Changdong, Nokcheon, Wolgye, Gwangwoon University, Seokgye, Sinimun, Hankuk Univ. of Foreign Studies and Hoegi.

The original 1974 core follows: Cheongnyangni, Jegidong, Sinseol-dong, Dongmyo, Dongdaemun, Jongno 5-ga, Jongno 3-ga, Jonggak, City Hall and Seoul Station. Then come Namyeong, Yongsan, Noryangjin, Daebang, Singil, Yeongdeungpo, Sindorim and Guro, and the Gyeongin stretch to the west: Guil, Gaebong, Oryudong, Onsu, Yeokgok, Sosa, Bucheon, Jungdong, Songnae, Bugae, Bupyeong, Baegun, Dongam, Ganseok, Juan, Dohwa, Jemulpo, Dowon, Dongincheon and Incheon.

The branch you don't type

At Guro the line forks. One branch goes west to Incheon, the other south along the Gyeongbu Line to Cheonan and Sinchang. Our map draws the southern branch as a dotted line, and the game types the Incheon side, which keeps the ride at 65 stations instead of close to a hundred. We explain how we chose in how we check station data.

One line, three railways

Only the short stretch between Seoul Station and Cheongnyangni, 7.8 kilometres, belongs to the subway proper. Counting the Korail sections that trains run through onto, Line 1 is 218.3 kilometres long and has 102 stations, and services run to Yeoncheon in the northeast, Incheon in the southwest and as far south as Cheonan and Sinchang. That is why the destination on the front of the train matters: not every Line 1 train goes to the same end.

Transfers and typing

Eighteen stations connect to other lines, among them Dobongsan, Changdong, Seokgye, Hoegi, Cheongnyangni, Dongdaemun, Jongno 3-ga, City Hall, Seoul Station, Yongsan, Noryangjin, Sindorim, Onsu and Incheon. The whole line takes 421 Hangul keystrokes, about 6.5 per station, because most names are two syllables. The longest is Dongducheon Jungang (동두천중앙) at 14 keystrokes, and Guro, Sosa and Bugae need only four. It is long rather than hard. Start Line 1.
