The Central line comes from the Central London Railway, which opened between Shepherd's Bush and Bank on 30 July 1900. Its flat fare of two pence earned it the nickname the Twopenny Tube. The New Works Programme of the 1930s and 1940s extended it far west to West Ruislip and Ealing Broadway and east to Epping, and took in a former Great Eastern Railway line through Barkingside, Fairlop and Hainault.
