The Metropolitan line comes from the Metropolitan Railway, which opened in January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon as the world's first underground railway. Its extensions into Buckinghamshire in the early twentieth century brought so much new housing along the route that the area became known as Metro-land. Electrification in 1961 cut the western end back to Amersham.
