The L is the grey line on the New York subway map. It runs from 8th Avenue in Manhattan along the 14th Street (Canarsie) Line, under the East River into Williamsburg and Bushwick, and through East New York to Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway. It has no fork: one route, 24 stations, all day and night.

A short history

The Brooklyn end is the oldest part. Trains began running there in 1906, between Canarsie and Williamsburg. The subway under 14th Street opened in 1924 and ran under the river to Montrose and Bushwick Avenues, and four years later the line reached Broadway Junction. On February 24, 2009 the L became the first New York subway service run by communications-based train control. The Canarsie Tunnel under the East River was repaired between April 2019 and April 27, 2020, on nights and weekends instead of the full shutdown first planned.
