Line 5 opened on June 2, 1906, between Gare d'Austerlitz, then called Gare d'Orléans, and Place d'Italie, and grew north over the following years. On October 12, 1942 it was extended from Gare du Nord to Église de Pantin, and on April 25, 1985 it reached Bobigny - Pablo Picasso, its northern end outside the city limits.
