Line 6 grew from several pieces. On October 2, 1900 the section between Étoile and Trocadéro opened as an extension of Line 1. It reached Passy on November 6, 1903 and Place d'Italie on April 24, 1906, crossing the Seine on the viaduct at Passy. The section from Place d'Italie to Nation opened in 1909, and in 1942 the pieces were joined into today's route, a half-circle around the south of the city.
Parts of it run on elevated viaducts, so it is one of the lines where you see the city from the train.
