Line 5 is the purple line. It opened first between Wangsimni and Sangil-dong in November 1995, and the full route was completed by December 30, 1996. It crosses the Han River twice and runs from Banghwa in the west. Past Gangdong it splits into the main line to Hanam Geomdansan and the Macheon branch. HelloSubway types the main line, 49 stations.
The route
From Banghwa the line passes Gaehwasan, Gimpo International Airport, Songjeong, Magok, Balsan, Ujangsan, Hwagok, Kkachisan, Sinjeong, Mokdong, Omokgyo, Yangpyeong, Yeongdeungpo-gu Office, Yeongdeungpo Market, Singil, Yeouido and Yeouinaru. It crosses the river to Mapo, Gongdeok, Aeogae, Chungjeongno, Seodaemun, Gwanghwamun, Jongno 3-ga, Euljiro 4-ga, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, Cheongu, Singeumho, Haengdang, Wangsimni, Majang, Dapsimni, Janghanpyeong, Gunja, Achasan and Gwangnaru, then crosses again to Cheonho, Gangdong, Gil-dong, Gubeundari, Myeongil, Godeok, Sangil-dong, Gangil, Misa, Hanam Pungsan, Hanam City Hall and Hanam Geomdansan.
The Macheon branch
After Gangdong a second branch runs south to Macheon. It is drawn dotted on our map and not typed. We first got the main line and the branch the wrong way round, and wrote about it in the Line 5 fork.
Transfers and typing
Fourteen stations are transfers, including Gimpo International Airport, Yeouido, Gongdeok, Jongno 3-ga, Wangsimni, Gunja and Cheonho. The line takes 384 Hangul keystrokes, about 7.8 per station. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park is again the longest at 26, then Hanam Geomdansan at 14 and Yeongdeungpo-gu Office at 13, while Mapo and Misa need four. Start Line 5.
