The Downtown Line opened in three stages. The first, between Chinatown and Bugis, opened on December 22, 2013. The second, from Bukit Panjang to Rochor, opened on December 27, 2015, and the third, from Fort Canning to Expo, on October 21, 2017. Hume station, between Hillview and Beauty World, was added on February 28, 2025.

The second half continues Chinatown, Fort Canning, Bencoolen, Jalan Besar, Bendemeer, Geylang Bahru, Mattar, MacPherson, Ubi, Kaki Bukit, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir, Tampines West, Tampines, Tampines East, Upper Changi and Expo.
