The East West Line platforms at Outram Park opened on December 12, 1987. The line was extended west to Clementi on March 13, 1988 and to Lakeside on November 5, 1988. The eastern extension to Tanah Merah opened on November 4, 1989, when the East West Line began running on its own, and Pasir Ris followed on December 16, 1989. Boon Lay opened on July 6, 1990, Joo Koon on February 28, 2009, and the extension to Tuas Link on June 18, 2017.

From Pasir Ris the line runs Tampines, Simei, Tanah Merah, Bedok, Kembangan, Eunos, Paya Lebar, Aljunied, Kallang, Lavender, Bugis, City Hall, Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar, Outram Park, Tiong Bahru, Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth, Buona Vista, Dover, Clementi, Jurong East, Chinese Garden, Lakeside, Boon Lay, Pioneer, Joo Koon, Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link.
