The North South Line is where the Singapore MRT began. The first section, from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh, opened on November 7, 1987. It was extended south to Raffles Place on December 12, 1987 and north to Yishun on December 20, 1988, and it took its present shape when the extension to Marina Bay opened on November 4, 1989. It has no branches.

From Jurong East the line goes north through Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak, Choa Chu Kang, Yew Tee, Kranji, Marsiling and Woodlands, then east through Admiralty, Sembawang, Canberra, Yishun and Khatib, and south through Yio Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Braddell, Toa Payoh, Novena, Newton, Orchard, Somerset, Dhoby Ghaut, City Hall, Raffles Place, Marina Bay and Marina South Pier. Station codes run from NS1 to NS28, with no NS6.
