The Asakusa Line was Toei's first subway. It opened as Line 1 on December 4, 1960 between Asakusabashi and Oshiage, with through service onto the Keisei railway from the first day. Extensions south reached Daimon and then, on June 21, 1968, Sengakuji, where through service with Keikyu began. The last section, to Nishi-magome, opened on November 15, 1968, completing today's 20-station route, and the line took the name Asakusa Line on July 1, 1978.

Through service onto the Hokuso Railway was added in 1991, and since 1993 trains have run through to Haneda Airport on the Keikyu line, so many visitors ride the Asakusa Line without knowing its name.
