The Namboku Line first opened on November 29, 1991 between Azabu-juban and Tamachi. It reached its full route of 19 stations, from Meguro to Akabane-iwabuchi, on September 26, 2000, when the Meguro extension opened. It shares tracks with the Toei Mita Line between Meguro and Shirokane-takanawa, and its trains run through onto the Tokyu Meguro Line south of Meguro and the Saitama Rapid Railway north of Akabane-iwabuchi.
