The Tozai Line opened in stages from December 1964, and the last section, from Toyocho to Nishi-Funabashi, was finished on March 29, 1969. It was the first line of the Eidan, today's Tokyo Metro, to leave Tokyo for another prefecture, Chiba. At Nakano it connects to the JR Chuo Line and at Nishi-Funabashi to the JR Sobu Line.
Tozai means east-west, and the line does run almost straight across the city.
