Shinjuku Station: which way to Shinjuku Gyoen, and why Shinjuku-gyoenmae is the easier stop

The garden is ten minutes from Shinjuku Station's south exit and five minutes from Exit 1 of Shinjuku-gyoenmae on the Marunouchi Line. What GO TOKYO and JNTO say.

In the game Shinjuku Station (M08) is on the Marunouchi Line and the JR Yamanote Line. The Toei Shinjuku and Oedo lines use a separate station, Shinjuku (Toei), and the Fukutoshin Line stops at Shinjuku-sanchome.

Shinjuku Gyoen: south exit, or two stops on

GO TOKYO says the garden is a ten-minute walk from the south exit of Shinjuku Station, on the JR, Keio and Odakyu lines. It gives a shorter route from the Marunouchi Line: Exit 1 of Shinjuku-gyoenmae Station, five minutes on foot. Shinjuku-gyoenmae is two stops past Shinjuku, after Shinjuku-sanchome, so you can stay on the Marunouchi Line.

Inside the garden

GO TOKYO gives admission as 500 yen and the hours as 9:00 to 16:30, last entry 30 minutes before closing, closed Mondays. The garden combines Japanese traditional, formal and landscape styles and has about 900 cherry trees. Drinking alcohol, smoking, and using sports equipment or musical instruments in the garden are prohibited.

The rest of Shinjuku

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, the Godzilla head on the Toho building and Omoide Yokocho are all part of the station's landmark list in the game. We do not give exit numbers for them, because the official pages we checked do not.

Typing it

Shinjuku is eight letters, 新宿 in Japanese. On the Marunouchi Line it comes between Nishi-shinjuku and Shinjuku-sanchome.

Walking times and exit names here are the ones published by the official tourism pages and agencies listed below. Big Tokyo stations are rebuilt all the time and exits move or close, so follow the signs in the station as well.
