Grand Central-42nd Street is on the 4, 5, 6 and 7 trains and the 42nd Street Shuttle, the S, which runs to Times Square. It is the second busiest station in the New York subway, with 35.8 million passengers in 2024, and it lies beneath Grand Central Terminal.

The exits

The Park Avenue side is reached through Grand Central Terminal. Lexington Avenue has several exits, including two staircases to the southeast corner of Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street. On Vanderbilt Avenue there is an underground entrance from the One Vanderbilt building, and the shuttle platforms have stairways to Madison Avenue.

What is near

Grand Central Terminal is a Beaux-Arts landmark completed in 1913. The Chrysler Building, completed in 1930 for the automaker Walter Chrysler, stands at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, a short walk east of the terminal, and the One Vanderbilt tower, opened in 2020, is next to it.

Where to eat

The Grand Central Oyster Bar is on the lower level of Grand Central Terminal, at 42nd Street and Park Avenue, and its first form opened as the Grand Central Terminal Restaurant when the terminal opened on 2 February 1913. The room has vaulted, Guastavino-tiled ceilings, and the archway in front is famous as a whispering gallery: someone standing in one corner can hear someone in the opposite corner perfectly, however softly they speak. Check opening hours before you go.

The shuttle

The 42nd Street Shuttle between here and Times Square was rebuilt and now has one wide island platform of 22,000 square feet, the largest platform in the subway system. Its new platform opened on 7 September 2021.
